Mauritania
Mauritania is contaminated with anti-personnel mines and cluster munition remnants.
Key Developments
In 2024, Mauritania reported reducing through technical survey (TS) just over 1km2 from two cluster munition-contaminated areas— Dalet Tigert and Dhbeiyatt—near Bir Moghrein in the far north Tiris Zemmour region. Both areas were identified as being contaminated in 2023. It also reported clearing 102,703m2 at Dalet Tigert, destroying in the process 29 submunitions. Survey and clearance were conducted by the National Humanitarian Demining Programme for Development (PNDHD) using national funds. As of December 2024, Mauritania had 10 areas with cluster munition remnants (CMR), covering an estimated area of almost 15.2km2. Due to the scale of the remaining contamination, the slow progress of clearance, and the lack of international support, Mauritania has requested a new extension (its third) to its Article 4 clearance deadline under the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM). It warned that, without international financial support, clearance will continue at its current pace, potentially delaying completion to 2035.
Recommendations for Action
-
Mauritania should strengthen its resource mobilisation strategy to ensure increased national and international funding are available to complete clearance by its third extended Article 4 deadline.
-
Mauritania should put in place a national coalition forum to support its resource mobilisation strategy and serve as a strategic avenue to engage potential donors.
-
Mauritania should elaborate a gender and diversity policy and implementation plan for its mine action programme as per the International Mine Action Standards (IMAS).
-
Mauritania should revise its national standard on environmental protection ensuring alignment with IMAS 07.13.
